Ask Farrell: How does Bryan Bresee compare?

At the end, Bryan Bresee proved he was the best prospect in the 2020 class.

That’s why the Clemson signee and five-star defensive end from Damascus, Md., finished atop the rankings and even though many other players had phenomenal showings at the Under Armour and All-American games, Bresee did absolutely nothing to fall.

What stands out most about Bresee are two things: His relentlessness on the field and the versatility he shows at his size.

Wearing a club on an injured left hand during All-American Bowl week, Bresee could have easily sat out and no one would have really blamed him. Instead, he didn’t miss a rep, worked inside and outside, and crushed offensive linemen all week.

What’s interesting about Bresee is that even at 6-foot-5 and 290 pounds, the five-star is insanely powerful and fast to the edge as he overwhelmed some of the best offensive tackles nationally during the week in San Antonio.

When Bresee moved inside he was almost equally as impressive getting in the backfield and causing problems.

Clemson has a long list of outstanding defensive tackles – Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence come to mind immediately – who were developed into elite NFL Draft picks and Bresee could be following suit.

The debate is over as Bresee finished No. 1.

Since the 2010 recruiting class, there have been six top-ranked defensive linemen in Rashan Gary (2016), Byron Cowart (2015), Da’Shawn Hand followed by Myles Garrett in 2014, Robert Nkemdiche (2013), Jadeveon Clowney (2011) and Ronald Powell in 2010.

We ask Rivals National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell how Bresee compares with the other No. 1 defensive linemen in the last decade and how he sees Bresee fitting in Clemson’s defense over the coming years?

FARRELL'S TAKE

“Bresee is so talented and versatile he will impact at Clemson right away. I don’t see a way he can’t. As far as how he compares to other No. 1 prospects at defensive line, he compares the closest to Rashan Gary, who also showed us he could play defensive end or defensive tackle. Gary didn’t have an amazing college career but he ended up as a first-rounder in the NFL Draft so he lived up to the hype. Bresee will do the same and probably have a better college career.”
