Position: Offensive Guard/Defensive Tackle
Size and speed: Helms is 6-foot-3, 300 pounds, and runs the 40-yard dash in 5.2 seconds.
Honors: As a junior, Helms earned all-conference and all-state honors in helping lead Stuttgart to a 14-0 record and the Arkansas Class 4A state championship. He was also named to the All-Arkansas Team by the Democrat-Gazette.
Statistics: Helms recorded 80 tackles, six sacks and two forced fumbles on the defensive side of the ball.
Favorite Schools: The five teams showing the most early interest are LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Iowa.
Skinny: One of Arkansas’ top prospects has received his first official scholarship offer, but will it be enough to pull him away from his current favorite?
“Arkansas offered me this week,” said Stuttgart standout Brett Helms. “It was a big honor and I’m really excited to have an offer, but it’s going to be awfully hard for someone to beat out Tennessee at this point.”
Helms said he made an unofficial visit to Knoxville for the Vols’ junior day event on Mar. 8.
“It was my first trip to Knoxville. I was blown away,” he said. “I got to meet all the coaches, tour the facilities, see the stadium. That place is huge. I can only imagine what it’s like with 100,000 people in there on Saturdays.
“Tennessee hasn’t made the official offer yet, but they’ve done everything but do that. They’re asking me to try and graduate early so I can come in there in December and join the team. I kind of took that as they definitely want me. I’m already planning some summer classes so I can do that.
“If they offer, I can pretty much say it’s a done deal. But I’m going to keep all my options open just in case.”
Helms plans to camp at Arkansas, LSU and Tennessee this summer. He also wants to visit Oklahoma.
Ole Miss and Iowa are also continuing to recruit him heavily.
