Arizona, Tulane host Funchess for camps

Dickinson, Texas quarterback Mike Funchess has kept busy this summer with camps.
"I went to camp at Arizona and Tulane," the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Funchess said. "I had a real good time at both camps. I really liked Arizona. Everything was nice about the school. The coaches were very good to visit with. I could enjoy playing football for them.

"Tulane's camp was a good one too. I enjoyed seeing the coaches and talking with them. I want to learn more about the school.
Funchess offers schools a drop back passer.
"Mike has a big-time arm," Dickinson coach Warren Trahan said. "He is exactly what you want in a drop-back passer. He's big. He's a tough kid. He'll stand in there and take a hit. When he throws the ball, it is accurate too. A lot of guys can wing it down the field. But Mike does that and puts it where he wants it to be."
Trahan knows what his signal caller can do as Funchess will begin his third year as a starter this fall.
"I've got two years of starting already," he said. "I'm really looking forward to this season. I'm feeling good about this upcoming year. This is my last one here and I want to make it as good as we can."
As a junior, Funchess completed 50-of-113 passes for 918 yards and eight scores.
Tulane and Arizona aren't the only two schools recruiting Funchess. UTEP, Baylor, Iowa, Texas Tech and Syracuse have been in touch already this spring and summer.
"UTEP and Baylor called in May along with Tulane and Arizona," Funchess said. "The others are all sending me quite a bit of mail. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about all of the schools."
Funchess probably won't make an early decision in this process.
"I don’t have anything set in my mind," he said. "I'll probably take my visits this fall before deciding anything."
