Junior to Watch: Marcus Thomas.
School: Tolleson, Ariz.
Position: Running Back.
Size and Speed: Marcus stands 6-foot-1, weighs in at 190 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds.
Statistics: Marcus rushed for 2,087 yards on 317 carries for an average of 6.6 yards per carry as a junior. He was also the team’s best receiver, catching 25 passes for 580 yards while averaging 23.2 yards per catch. Marcus had a total of 27 his junior season.
Honors: Thomas was the only junior running back all-state selection. He was selected all-area and all-league.
Favorite Schools: Marcus is keeping his recruiting options open in the early going. He is hearing from Arizona, ASU, UCLA, Ohio State and Vanderbilt. Vandy is a new team recruiting the state of Arizona. The new staff at Vanderbilt is taking their recruiting efforts national.
The Skinny: According to many, Thomas is among the top three prospects from the Grand Canyon State this season. Vandy has Thomas as their number one target in Arizona this season.
With a closer look it is easy to see why Thomas is causing such a stir. “Marcus is a great and hard working young man,” Tolleson head coach Dan Widmaier said. “Marcus has a tremendous attitude and he’s always asking us coaches how he can improve. He has a never say quit approach to the game and life,” Widmaier said.
As a running back is has great vision. He can find the smallest crevice and make a hole out of it. “Marcus has great moves,” Widmaier said. “He’s very slippery and squirmy. Marcus was our entire offense last year. Everybody knew it and still Marcus dominated.”
You want to talk about tough. Read on. Marcus played half the season with a very painful thigh bruise. He didn’t tell anybody. Marcus just sucked it up and kept on playing. Marcus is a throwback to the day you had to drag players off the field. When you consider his injury and add up his stats that racked up as a junior, then you have to marvel about this tough and gritty athlete…
