Allen linebacker has his first offer in
When Allen (Texas) High School linebacker Melvin Spears picked up his first scholarship offer, it was from a school that he didn't know much about. However considering his position at linebacker, what little he does know certainly has him interested.
Last week, Spears became the third 2011 prospect at Allen to pick up a scholarship offer and it came from the University of Iowa.

"I'd been waiting for something and then it came," Spears said. "I've gotten a few letters here and there (from Iowa) but I wasn't expecting an offer from them any time soon. I'm interested. I heard that they have a good linebacker system with linebackers going to the league and that's pretty exciting."
With a NFL-heavy track record of linebackers, Iowa's interest in him left Spears excited.
"I talked to Coach Campbell. It was pretty good. He said that the linebacker coach down there was pretty impressed with how I did in the season so I thought that that was pretty cool."
Along with Iowa, Spears has been picking up interest from the likes of Texas Tech, SMU and others. This past weekend, Spears was at SMU's junior day. His junior season was his first year starting at the powerhouse program of Allen.
"This last season was my first time starting and before that I was second string," he said. "I've been at Allen since the first grade so I've always been looking towards playing there.
"I feel that I'm pretty good at reading the line. I'm more of an inside or strongside linebacker."
In the offseason, Spears is part of a strong basketball run at Allen where the Eagles are poised for their first playoff run since 1999.
