San Diego often gets overlooked because it sits just south of one of the deepest high school football talent pools in the country. However, college coaches have discovered plenty of big-time players in San Diego. In this year's class, safety Todd Doxey of Hoover High is one of the best of the bunch.
Because of his solid play on the field and his potential to be a dominating college player, Doxey has been selected by Rivals.com to play in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on Jan. 4 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
"I can't believe I'm officially labeled now as an All-American," Doxey said. "I've never been to Florida. I've never played on national television. I've never done any of this. But now that Rivals has selected me to be in the game, a lot of the things I've dreamed about are going to come true."
Doxey's coach, Michael Wright, said the four-star Rivals250 prospect will play well in the game.
"Todd's special," Wright said. "He can do so many different things that will make him valuable to one lucky school on the next level. He can really come up and hit you, but he's also fast enough that he can return punts, kicks and even do some damage at receiver.
"He's got instincts, things you can't teach. Lots of kids have speed and athleticism, but what sets him apart from the others is he finishes."
Doxey will play safety in the game and said he's ready to make some big plays on defense.
"I like to lay people out," he said. "When you're in the game, the adrenalin gets pumping and there's nothing that can stop you."
Heading into his final game of the season, Doxey had six interceptions - two of which he brought back for scores. He also was over the 75 tackle mark and was leading the city in receiving with more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns.
When it comes to recruiting, Doxey lists Oregon as his leader. The Ducks are followed by Washington State, Arizona State, Fresno State and Oregon State.
