Although Hubbard, Ohio running back Larry Scott is ranked in the Rivals100, his recruitment has been mostly confined to schools within the region. That changed on Wednesday when Alabama offered.
"That just came through about 20 minutes ago," Hubbard head coach Brian Hoffman said.
The initial interest in the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Scott from Alabama preceded Wednesday's offer by just a few hours.
"Actually, it just kind of cropped up the last few days," Hoffman said. "Yesterday I received a phone call from the running backs coach. That was my first conversation (with him).
"He told me they liked the style of running back that he is and he kind of fits what they do offensively. They also liked the fact that he was versatile and saw some of his defensive plays. They inquired if he had an interest in playing on that side of the ball as well."
How Alabama will factor into Scott's recruitment remains to be seen, but his coach feels he will be open to checking out the Crimson Tide.
"Obviously it is a great honor when they are taking interest in one of your players," Hoffman said. "They obviously have a prestigious program and have won national championships how many out of the last few years. When you're drawing that type of attention… wow.
"At this point I think he is taking it all in and is wide open. I know there are a few schools early on in this process that have done a real nice job in their conversations with him and have established a bond with him, but I still feel at this point he is pretty wide open."
West Virginia is the school Scott has visited more than any other during his recruitment, and his teammate, four-star offensive guard Matthew Jones, is already committed to the Mountaineers. Other schools have also made strong inroads with Scott at this stage of the process according to Hoffman.
"I think he had a positive visit at Michigan State. One of my other players is really doing well there in Kurtis Drummond and I feel they have done a nice job," Hoffman said. "The Cincinnati coach, (Steve) Clinkscale, and the coach at Indiana, (Deland) McCullough, those guys have been in to see him quite a bit as well."
Scott is ranked as the No. 3 prospect in the state of Ohio's 2015 class and No. 58 in the Rivals100 presented by Under Armour.
