"I talked to Ole Miss and Duke the other day," Birmingham said.
Glenn Spencer contacted Birmingham for the Blue Devils. He did not recall the name of the Rebels coach that called.
"He was trying to get me to come up there for camp," Birmingham said.
Ole Miss has been active in the state of Alabama during these early days of recruiting for 2007. The Rebels offered pre-evaluation Rivals100 member Sidell Corley last week. Duke, which signed Robert Drum out of Hoover (Ala.) last year, also tends to make early noise on the recruiting trail.
Birmingham is one of two standout prospects, along with Eltoro Freeman at his position on his high school team. Freeman was a standout in the Alabama North-South Junior All-Star game with six total tackles.
In terms of early favorites, Birmingham and Freeman took an unofficial visit to Florida State during the season and liked what they saw.
"The campus was nice and the atmosphere was nice," Birmingham said. "I like Louisville, too."
Other schools in the early mix include Notre Dame, Alabama and Auburn.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Birmingham had 114 total tackles (74 solo), three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, three interceptions and a blocked punt this season.
He added that he hoped to attend the Athens NIKE Camp on April 29 at the University of Georgia.
