Alabama DE makes his choice

Gadsden (Ala.) Litchfield defensive end Jamare Mathis will be heading 200 miles from home to play his college football.
"I am going to be headed to Troy," Mathis said. "I love (Troy head coach Larry Blakeney and the environment at Troy."

The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder made his official visit to the campus last weekend.
"I loved the way that it's set up," Mathis said. "I loved all of the academic buildings and the stadium is beautiful."
Mathis was recruited by Troy assistant Mike Pelton.
"He's a great coach," Mathis said. "He's also my position coach, so it was good to get to know him and see how he is."
Mathis said that the Trojans plan to use him at either end position with a possibility that he ends up at rover linebacker.
"It depends on how much weight I gain," he said. "If I don't gain enough weight, I could be playing linebacker."
The Trojans' schedule, which annually includes some of the top programs in college football, was another appealing factor for Mathis.
"It gets you national exposure," Mathis said. "And that's what I want."
Mathis is a two-star rated recruit by Rivals.com.
