Add two more to the Cougar class

The University of Houston didn’t have to go far to get their two most recent commitments.

After years of getting away from recruiting the Greater Houston area, the Cougar coaching staff has reestablished their in-roads into the local football hot bed.
They started close to home. Just outside the gates of Houston is Jack Yates High School – an inner city school rich in talent and history. They received commitments from offensive lineman Quinten Smith on Friday and Quinte Williams (left) late last week.
Smith, committed to the Cougars while participating in their summer camp.
“I am a Cougar – I just told them today,” he said. “I really like what I see out here and their training program. The drills they are teaching me out here are going to make my senior season a lot more productive.
“I didn’t even play football as a freshman, so I couldn’t image this ever happening,” he said. “It’s a great situation for me, and it’s close to home.”
Moving to defense after two all-district seasons at offensive line, Smith combines the size and speed necessary to play defensive end.
Smith (6-4, 240-pounds) had offers from Arkansas, Iowa, Houston, Louisiana Tech, Grambling and Alcorn State.
“Schools talked to my coach about moving me to the defensive line because they like my size and speed,” he said. “They see me putting on some weight in college and keeping my speed down.”
Patrolling the secondary is Williams – a 6-1, 180-pound hard-hitting safety. Williams had four interceptions last season and doubles as a wide receiver for the Lions.
“I’ve been asked by a few schools if I’d like to play as a big cornerback,” he said. “I’d be happy to make the move if I can get on the field.”
