ACC is future home for Georgia safety

When asked about how recruiting was going, Metter, Ga., Eric Williams said things were going all right. Then he paused and let loose a slight chuckle. “Well, it’s going more than all right,” he said. “I committed.” Committed to whom?
“I committed to Georgia Tech,” Williams, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound safety with 4.55-second speed in the 40-yard dash, said. “I actually did it late last week. The coaches were really excited.”

Williams picked Tech over an offer from Maryland and interest from Arkansas, Auburn and Florida. He said it was Tech’s strong education that sold him.
“I just like the school – everything about it,” he said. “It’s the best place for me to get a degree in case I don’t make it to the NFL. I don’t know what I want to major in yet, but I know that it’ll be top-notch no matter what I decide to do.”
What he does on the field is hit and hit hard, according to his coach Shane Dunlar.
“Eric is a tall, physical free safety,” Dunlar said. “He's a very intelligent, quality kid who does just as well in the classroom as on the football field.”
Williams has a 225-pound bench-press, 405-pound squat and a 34.7 inch vertical leap. He recorded 114 tackles and had four interceptions as a junior.
“I’ve worked hard this summer on breaking better on the ball,” he said. “I was already able to tackle and hit hard. But I wanted to break on the ball better and get more interceptions.”
He’ll be able to test out his improved coverage skills as practices continue throughout August and then in the future at Georgia Tech.
This is Georgia Tech’s fourth pledge for the Class of 2004.
