One of the most closely watched players at the Rivals Three Stripe Camp presented by Adidas in New Orleans on Sunday was five-star cornerback Anthony Cook.
In a loaded group of defensive backs at the camp, Cook was among the best and earned his ticket to the Rivals Five-Star Challenge for a second consecutive year.
Those following his recruitment know the major players, but many are waiting for confirmation to hear which teams are in his final considerations. Cook is likely going to make his commitment during the season, so he says that he’ll release his official top group within the next month or two.
“I’m thinking about when to make a commitment, but I don’t think it’s going to be before the season,” he said. “I’m planning on graduating early, so I’m not going to take all my officials, but I want to have a top-ten either April or May.”
After recent visits to Texas and Clemson, Cook made a stop by LSU following Sunday’s event. He still has some appointments this spring with other teams, but he’s fast-approaching that point where assistants are going to dial things up in their pursuit of him down the stretch.
IN HIS WORDS
Recapping his recent visit to Clemson
“I like it out there,” he said. “It was my second time visiting and I got to talk with Coach (Dabo) Swinney this time. I’m going to go out there again - I just like the environment, I like Coach (Mike) Reed, I like him too.”
“They had a slide in the players lounge,” he said. “Like right in the middle where you just ride in right on the slide and I thought that was cool.”
On Ohio State, and what close friend Jeffrey Okudah has said to him
“(Okudah) has just been telling me that it’s a process,” he said. “He said they’ll get you there, but it’s a process of working extremely hard and he’s excited about the future. I’m supposed to be coming up there for their spring game and staying with him and Barron, but he said he likes it.”
On LSU (prior to his unofficial visit)
Right after this camp I’m heading out there – I talked to Coach (Corey) Raymond and he said that would be cool,” he said. “I really want to get to a practice so I can see the DB’s in action. Since I’m not going to a practice this time and just checking out the facilities, I just want to get a vibe for the coaches, see how they interact and just get a feel for them.”
RIVALS REACTION
Many in the state feel that the Longhorns have a strong chance with Cook and just as many others feel he is a lean to LSU. The scales seem like they could actually be tipped in Clemson’s direction for the time being, as he’s made multiple visits there already and the defense is an ideal fit for him. Ohio State has a strong chance as well thanks to Okudah’s influence, but the Buckeyes staff is going to have to help itself with him over the summer.
