Four-star tight end Mustapha Muhammad is nearing the release of his top-ten schools at Ridge Point High’s spring game on May 24.

He said this weekend that if he were to release it today, it would be a top-12. As he thinks about making those final cuts, he’s been on the move to get his last couple of looks at programs.

“I’m trying to get to ten schools,” he said. “It’s just about set, I just need to take a couple more visits, and do some more research.”

Muhammad was made some moves over the weekend with a visit to Houston to check out a Cougars spring practice. He had complimentary things to say about how the team looked in his first opportunity to see Major Applewhite running the show.

“Coach Applewhite at U of H, he’s a really good coach,” he said. “He has a great offensive mind and I like what they’re doing with their offense.

“With the new staff all together, that was the first practice that I got to see,” he said. “They mainly lined up in a 2x2 set with a tight end, they keep one on the field at all times. Coach (James) Kasey is an awesome person, he was in the NFL, and I know I can learn a lot from him.”

With the hometown school available to visit whenever he wants, other programs will hope to make a big impact on his considerations with his visits during spring games. Coming up, he has plans to be at Michigan’s and Texas A&M’s, and is still deciding whether or not he feels the need to make a return to Texas this spring.

IN HIS WORDS

On Michigan

“I’ve always been interested in them,” he said. “I really like their pro-style system. It’s really unique and I really get a good vibe from Michigan. Their communication has been consistent, but they’re not bugging me, that’s the thing. Some schools hit me up every day saying call me, text me, good morning - that’s cool and I understand it, but I have a life outside of football … but (Michigan’s) been not too much, not too little.”

On Texas

“I had a great visit; it was awesome,” he said. “My favorite thing was hanging out with the players, I stayed at Shane Buechele’s dorm, and he was a really down-to-earth person. I got to interact with people I’ve been watching on TV and getting to go to practices and see them play in pads, building relationships is really cool.”

“Honestly, Coach (Tom) Herman and his staff hasn’t missed a beat,” he said. “I already knew who they were, they recruited me at U of H and one day Coach (Corby) Meekins, the tight ends coach, came to visit me at school in a UT shirt and I was like ‘wow, good to see you,’ so we have a good relationship. (Herman’s staff) has been recruiting me for a year now and they were my first offer.”

On Texas A&M

“I’ve been talking to the coaches about (visiting for the Maroon and White game),” he said. “I want to get back to Aggieland, it’s been a minute and it’s not far at all.”

“I have a relationship with Cam (Horry), and I think he’s going to play tight end there, (Keynel) McZeal is a little closer to me [as a player], moves a little better,” he said. “They’ve told me that they would use me more similar to Ricky Seals-Jones, and I have the ability to line up attached and that’s why they’re recruiting me; because I can block and line up in the spread scheme.”

RIVALS REACTION

Muhammad also mentioned that he would like to get another look at LSU as well. He didn’t say which teams were on the chopping block, but the programs he discussed this weekend have had long-standing relationships with him and appear to be on the safe side.

Beyond releasing his top ten, he’s not firm on any further timeline with his recruitment, but is leaning towards waiting until the end of his senior season to make a commitment. Muhammad is scheduled to be in action this weekend at the Rivals Three Stripe Camp presented by Adidas in Dallas, Texas.
