4-Star S Cam Jones on upcoming Nebraska OV, Ole Miss & more

For all the anticipation surrounding Chip Kelly and his return to college football, it wasn’t enough to keep several players committed to UCLA from re-opening their respective recruitments. One of the biggest names of those defectors is four-star Mansfield, Texas, safety Cam Jones.

Unsurprisingly, there has been a renewed interest in Jones, who was previously committed to Texas Tech prior to UCLA. What is a surprise is the seeming lack of urgency by the new Bruins regime to even attempt to keep him in Kelly’s first recruiting class.

“I have not spoken to them since I de-committed,” he said. “Actually, I don’t really know who the DB coach is out there right now and they haven’t contacted me.”

In the meantime, as things have picked up for Jones, he said that he is inclined to wait until February to commit and sign with whomever he will make his final decision on. With that in mind, a few teams have made him a top priority as he suddenly has much to think about in the coming weeks.

“It’s been a good kind of chaos,” he said. “A lot of schools have been coming in a short period of time. Some of those schools I’m interested in - I haven’t had much time to look into them all yet but I’ll be visiting, and there have been in-home visits.”

Notably, Nebraska and Ole Miss in particular have seemed to be among the teams showing a significant recent interest in Jones. He’ll also be in Lincoln this weekend for an official visit.

IN HIS WORDS

On Nebraska, who offered Jones on December 7.

“They’re definitely one of my top schools,” he said. “Coach (Scott) Frost and the staff, they made things shake at UCF; turned that program around. I believe that they can change Nebraska back to Nebraska with him as head coach in a short amount of time. I may be interested in joining that, so that’s why I’m taking my official there this weekend.”

Recapping his visit with Frost this week at his school

“We all chatted, laughed, and had a good time,” he said. “We talked about some football stuff, we’re trying to get to know each other in a short amount of time, but it’s been pretty cool.”

On Ole Miss, who was by for an in-home visit on December 12.

“They’re also a top contender,” he said. “Coach (Jason) Jones, Coach (Wesley) McGriff are pretty cool. My family likes them, and Oxford is Oxford. I can’t wait to get out there and see it for myself too.”

RIVALS REACTION

Jones said that Texas Tech has maintained contact with him and he is leaning towards taking one of his official visits there. His official visit to Ole Miss is slated for late January, leaving two other potential officials to be taken. Baylor coaches stopped through Mansfield earlier this week to visit with Jones and Bears commit Jackson Gleeson.

Utah, whose four-out-of-eleven players from Texas on this season’s roster come from the Dallas area, is also a recent offer. In Jones’ tweet announcing it, he made mention of the players he knows on the team, so perhaps the Utes are a sneaky candidate to steal a visit as well.
