KATY -- David Ugwoegbu has a lot of eyes on his recruitment as he continues to move closer to a decision. In the meantime, he’s doing plenty on the football field to keep the focus on him as well.
Long and devastatingly quick, Ugwoegbu is a linebacker in a defensive end’s body. His versatility off the edge has his Seven Lakes coaches lining him up anywhere they want to funnel opposing offenses to with a few other strong interior defensive linemen to help force the issue.
“I feel great,” Ugwoegbu said. “I love being able to make an impact on the game. I love making the other team have to worry about me on offense. So I was just out there trying to fly around and make plays.”
Ugwoegbu was on-hand for Texas A&M’s near-win over Clemson a few weeks ago, and though he doesn’t have it set in stone, is eyeing up a return to College Station in a week-and-a-half for an official visit when the Aggies host upstart Kentucky. The other horse in the race is Oklahoma, where he said that he expects to take his official visit in November when the Sooners take on Kansas.
IN HIS WORDS
On Oklahoma
“Things have stayed consistent with them,” he said. “They’ve just really been encouraging me about my season as it’s been going on. I like how Coach (Lincoln) Riley has stayed in constant contact with me - that makes me feel wanted more than anything else.”
What he’s been watching on OU’s defense
“I’ve seen the ‘jack’ position - the outside linebacker spot that I would be playing - I like how they’ve used it,” he said. “That’s the position I would be playing and depending on what the man at the end of the line does, he’s rushing the quarterback or dropping back in coverage and I think that’s the perfect fit for me.”
His expectation for his official visit
“I’m really looking to get a better idea about the environment in Norman,” he said. “I want to seem more of how the town backs the football team.”
On Texas A&M
“I wish I could have gone to the game against Bama, but it was away,” he said. “I think I am looking at going to the Kentucky game because it’s going to be a while before their next home game after that.”
What he’s been watching on A&M’s defense
“I have seen a change in mentality more than anything,” he said. “I was at the game against Clemson and they were very hungry out there - and you can tell it’s from Jimbo (Fisher). He’s coming in and changing them into a potential championship team.”
On the attention he’s received from defensive coordinator Mike Elko
“Coach Elko is turning up the heat, for sure,” he said. “I let them know that I plan on making my decision in December, so they’re telling me to keep them in mind.”
