The Texas Longhorns staff hosted a number of big-name receivers at its junior day event last weekend, one of which was three-star Clear Lake recruit Ja’Kori Morgan.
He and four-star receiver Tommy Bush came and went without offers, but it seems clear the Longhorns staff is being judicious about its numbers at the position with a good number in-hand for the next few seasons. Offered receivers Al’Vonte Woodard and Brennan Eagles also attended, but both have much to consider in the way of other big opportunities around the country.
Morgan may be a little further away from an offer with Texas for the time being, but things could continue between the two this spring. If the Longhorns staff feels its grip loosening elsewhere, Morgan could very well be the next man up.
“I liked the field and the facilities, those were pretty nice,” he said of his visit. “I think they’ll offer me, but it won’t be right away. I think it will be some time in the future … They just said that they’re going to come back and see me in the spring and a couple of camps.”
In the meantime, he currently holds five offers, perhaps the most notable of which being Houston, Kansas State, and more recently, Oregon State.
IN HIS WORDS
On Houston
“One thing I like about Houston is they have everything back established now with Coach (Major) Applewhite,” he said. “I like Coach (Kenith) Pope, he’s the one recruiting me, and Coach (Darrell) Wyatt, I thought he was pretty nice.”
“I like the atmosphere, the swag and everything - I love everything about it,” he said.
On Kansas State
“They said that they need a big, physical receiver and they feel like I’m that guy,” he said. “I’ve been up there for a game and they took care of me, it’s pretty nice. We’ve been talking ever since they played Florida Atlantic [last season] and they’ve been staying in touch with me.”
On his level of concern with head coach Bill Snyder’s recently revealed health issues
“That’s something I’ve been trying to look into,” he said. “I don’t think he’s going to be there for another five years.”
On Oregon State
“I don’t really know too much about them, they just came out of the blue and offered me,” he said. “They just inboxed me on Twitter and said they were going to offer.”
On the possibility of heading to the Pacific Northwest
“I’m going to look into it, but I wasn’t really thinking about it,” he said. “I don’t want to really go too far - maybe just like Kansas, Georgia, something like that.”
RIVALS REACTION
It will be interesting to watch what happens with Morgan’s stock over the course of the spring. Players aren’t going to wait around for other recruits to effectively help them make up their minds for them, and more schools might pick up on that with Morgan in the way that Oregon State has. He has a solid combination of size, speed and ball skills, and won’t likely be sitting on just the five offers he has now for long.
