Caleb Chapman is a fast-rising prospect in Texas this spring and part of the state’s loaded wide receiver class.

With Wednesday’s offer from West Virginia, the Friendswood, Texas, prospect now has well surpassed double-digit offers and seems to have a relative interest in each. Chapman has made a few visits but many of the teams that have gotten involved with him are out-of-state programs.

Two of those teams are Iowa State and Oregon State - both of which Chapman would like to make trips to this summer. He’s proven willing to travel this spring, and picked up his offer from Duke on a recent visit to Durham.

“I’m probably on the phone with (Iowa State) every week,” he said. “I was excited by the Oregon State offer, the only downside that I can think of right now is that it’s far away, but if it’s the right fit for me, I have to make it happen.”

Time will tell how things pan out with the Mountaineers, but for now, Chapman seems to be smitten early on with the Blue Devils.

IN HIS WORDS

On Duke

“The campus, facilities and coaches were amazing, so I have to say they’re my biggest offer so far,” he said. “I kind of-sort of knew I was going to pick up that offer when I went out there, but I also knew anything could happen.”

“It’s almost sort of felt like home out there,” he said. “Coach (David) Cutcliffe is like a father-figure to everybody, so it was a good visit.”

On Baylor, where he visited mid-February

“I think they’re improving and changing the way people are thinking of them,” he said. “The campus was amazing. It was one of the best campuses I’ve seen - and it’s in Texas. Of course the food looked good, but other than that it was really nice out there.”

RIVALS REACTION

Chapman might not be the household name that some others in the state are in this class, but that’s no reflection of his ability. He’s got a long frame and is a smooth runner that can make some eye-popping catches downfield.

Although his offers have come from all over, he has also visited the more local options of Houston and UTSA. While the Cougars have yet to jump on the bandwagon, it seems as though there is still room left on it as Chapman isn’t yet focused on narrowing the focus of his recruitment.

“I haven’t even thought about that, honestly,” he said. “I’m just grinding and doing my thing, so I haven’t even thought about that.”
