3-Star RB Ta'Zhawn Henry names Iowa State his leader

DALLAS, Tex. -- Now that Houston, Texas, all-purpose back Ta’Zhawn Henry has trimmed down his list to a top-six and set a commitment date for August 8, and now, has publicly named a leader.

Iowa State is now officially the team to beat in his recruitment, and he was very clear on that.

“I’m going to be truthful, Iowa State is my number-one right now,” he said. “They’re on top of my board, I’m just going to let it be known.”

That would appear to leave very little else to talk about, but he said that he still needs to talk through his decision with his family and get their blessing with his eventual choice.

“First, I need to talk with each coaching staff,” he said. “Then I need to get my family to the place that I’m trying to commit to and see how they feel about it.”

The most likely X-Factor in the whole operation could be Texas A&M. Should the Aggies choose to come through with an offer, Henry might have to reconsider his stance.

IN HIS WORDS

More on Iowa State

“Iowa State? I really love Iowa State,” he said. “I could argue for hours about it. You have to visit Ames to really know what I’m talking about; Ames is a beautiful place.”

“We talk about how we could start a new class and build something that has never been built up there,” he said. “I love Coach (Matt) Campbell - he’s more than just a coach.”

On Texas A&M

“I talk to Coach (Clarence) McKinney everyday,” he said. “I’m going out there next week. Right now, I think they have someone that they’re looking at in front of me, but I would be going there as an athlete, not a running back.”

On TCU

“I have been talking to Coach [Gary Patterson] and Coach [Curtis Luper],” he said. “They said they’re holding a spot for me no matter what, nobody can take it. I feel like I could come in there and do big things in the Big 12.”

RIVALS REACTION

Iowa State has been a hot team as spring has given way to summer and the Cyclones look to be on the brink of another commitment in Henry if things hold steady until August. He hoped to have had either an offer from A&M or Texas by now, but those have yet to come. He also said that he believes he would be used more in TCU’s offense than the others that have offered.

Henry is a quick and gifted runner that is a big play asset in the passing game as well. If Iowa State can rope him in and keep the other commits it has so far from the state of Texas, Campbell and his staff will have some legitimate difference-makers on both sides of the ball in its 2018 class.
