3-star Los Angeles TE Isaiah Smalls a big priority for Cal coaches

The Latest: Despite having an offer list approaching double digits, three-star tight end Isaiah Smalls hasn’t had as many opportunities to get out and see colleges in person. Instead, he’s been focusing on building relationships with coaches over the phone and via social media. One of the schools doing the best job of keeping in touch with Smalls thus far has been California. Rivals.com caught up with Smalls at the recent Los Angeles stop of the Rivals 3-Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas to talk about the Bears and where his recruitment stands heading into a busy summer.

In His Words: “I talk to Cal a lot. I’ve been talking with their offensive coordinator, Coach Baldwin and he just tells me they need an athletic tight end in their offense and they think I can fit that spot. I keep trying to find a time to get up there. I have a busy schedule and I ‘m trying to make it work so I can visit campus and meet all the coaches and stuff.”

On Coach Baldwin: “We’ve been building a pretty good solid relationship. He’s just waiting for me to get up there so we can talk face to face and I can see how I like it and things like that. He was a head coach before so he knows what he’s talking about and he said they are going to throw it a lot and that I would be a good fit in the offense.”.

Rivals Reaction: Smalls said it’s been frustrating not to take as many trips as he would like and because of that he might take extra time to narrow his list. He said he hopes to visit Cal in the summer, but if not the Bears will be in the mix to receive an official visit
