HUMBLE, Tex. -- Atascocita has been on roll since its second game of the season, led by a stout and aggressive defense. One of the players leading the charge in the Eagles’ front seven is three-star linebacker/defensive end Jaylon Allen.
Allen has managed to fly under the radar as a somewhat under-recruited prospect, but he has a handful of sacks this season and is a fantastic natural athlete with plenty of upside. Allen’s potential potential is a big part of what makes him an intriguing prospect, but as he’s improved this season, so too has the Eagles defense as a whole.
“We had some struggles at first, but now we’re looking really good,” he said. “The team is just united, we’re getting in the groove now, but we still have a long way to go … I’m doing pretty good, I’m still learning how tackles move, how to get past them, stuff like that.”
Allen is still a bit light as a defensive end prospect, but has the pass-rushing skills off the edge to be a factor for someone. He currently holds offers from Central Arkansas, Louisiana-Monroe, Memphis and UNLV, but the Tigers could likely be considered the front-runner as the top FBS team in the group with a defense that has to attack opposing quarterbacks relentlessly.
IN HIS WORDS
On Memphis
“They call me pretty frequently,” he said. “At least every week they call to ask me how my games are going and just see how I’m doing in general.”
“I see a lot of pass-rushing, blitzing, things like that,” he said. “Coming off the edge, that’s where I would be good at, so I’m just hoping I have a chance to get out there … I have to see when my parents are thinking about letting me go, so I just haven’t set up [an official visit] yet.”
On UNLV
“They don’t call me as frequently, but I get a lot of letters from them checking up on me,” he said. “It would be just a whole new environment, temperature, all of that … They have been telling me the defense has been looking good even though they took some losses to some bigger teams, but that the pass rush is looking good at linebacker.”
RIVALS REACTION
Memphis should be the leader in the race, and the Tigers have done well for themselves this season playing well in televised games. Allen mentioned the inability to see UNLV on television on as he can Memphis being something that makes it even more difficult to lean towards the Rebels. As the Tigers staff has also been more proactive in their recruitment of Allen, it seems as though that to-be-determined official visit could be a the deal-breaker in his decision.
