3-Star DB Hunter Henry recaps recent Texas visit

Hunter Henry has quickly established himself as one of central Texas’ most intriguing defensive recruits this spring.

He’s set to play in a linebacker-safety role for a reloaded Lake Travis team in the fall, but over the past few weeks has been turning heads with his work at defensive back on the camp circuit. Last weekend he was one of the top DB’s at the Lone Star Prospects Showcase camp in Dripping Springs, and a few weeks ago, held his own against some of the state’s top receivers in the Houston event of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camps presented by adidas.

Last Thursday he also made a stop by Texas for a visit. This weekend, while back in Houston for a Pylon 7-on-7 regional qualifying event, he’ll make two more visits to Rice and Houston. He said that the busy schedule has been good for him to get more exposure, however demanding it may be.

“It’s very fun to go out and compete against all the talent that I have been,” he said. “I will say that it’s been pretty time-consuming. It can be a little stressful at times, running back-and-forth doing these different things, but I like the fact that I can put myself in front of as many eyes as I can, and competing is competing.”

IN HIS WORDS

Recapping his visit to Texas

“Started off with a tour of the facilities, and everyone knows that Texas has some of the most top-notch facilities out there,” he said. “I would say the biggest highlight from the whole thing was that me and my dad got a lot of one-on-one attention from the recruiting staff, and I would say that it’s been one of the best visits that I’ve been on in that respect. They answered a lot of my questions and it was very much a relationship builder between us and Texas.”

“We got to talk to the coaches for probably a good 15 minutes,” he said. “I wouldn’t say it was necessarily the best opportunity to get a lot of conversation with them, but I got a good feel for some of the roles I could be playing for them, how they felt about my skill set and where I could fit in.”

RIVALS REACTION

Henry has already made one visit to Rice, and between solo trips and with his 7-on-7 team has also been to Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas State - who has given him his only offer thus far. While he might not be what many expect to see in one of this camp season’s more dynamic and competitive defensive backs, he’s certainly been among the most impressive. Henry might have to be patient and keep working at a high level this offseason to convince some top programs to move on him, but if he plays this fall as he has this spring, it won’t be long before some such program will choose to make him a top priority.
