3-star DB commits to Syracuse

After a summer that saw him travel across the Southeast to compete and showcase his skills for coaches, Class of 2016 three-star Atlanta (Ga.) Mays defensive back Monquavion Brinson made a surprise decision on Monday night, deciding to take his talents to the Northeast.

"I committed to Syracuse," said Brinson, the No. 28 ranked cornerback in the country. "I felt like it was time for me to do it. I felt like that they were recruiting me strong and we had a relationship. I didn't fee like wasting their time, I feel like it's a home for me and they were serious about me so I want to be serious about them."
It was a whirlwind recruitment for Brinson and the Orange, especially because the school didn't offer until defensive backs coach Fred Reed had a chance to scout Brinson in person in late May. Brinson said his relationship with Reed grew quickly and ultimately led to his decision.
"For him to watch me in person he got to see my ability up close," Brinson said. "It wasn't just watching my highlight tape but he got to see me in person and see what I do, good and bad. When he offered it was because he knew he wanted me on his defense."
The two have been in almost daily contact since, which helped Brinson feel at ease about making the decision.
"He's been talking to me every since then on a consistent basis," Brinson said. "He's always there to answer when I call and he's always keeping in touch."
The 5-foot-11, 163-pound defensive back made the decision despite never visiting campus, but said he's more than comfortable with his decision.
"I look at the school all the time on the Internet," Brinson said. "I was a little nervous at first but as I kept looking more into I wasn't, I just felt comfortable. I know it's the place for me and I can take my official visit in the fall and spend more time there."
Brinson admitted that outside of Ernie Davis, he didn't know much about the Orange when he first picked up the offer. But now he knows he's going to be a fit, both on and off the field.
"They said they love the way I play and they think my physicality can help them win on defense," he said. "I know it's cold up there and it's far from home but the more I looked into it the more I knew it was for me."
Brinson joins fellow Georgia native Will Harper on the Orange commit list and said the two have a unique bond that they hope to carry over into college.
"We're real good friends and we used to play together in rec ball," Brinson said. "I love the idea of us playing together again."
Will that playing time come early in his college career? Brinson said he's been assured he will have the opportunity to compete for a spot on the field from Day 1.
"Coach told me that it would be nice to have me there and if I work hard and come in ready I could get a chance to play early," Brinson said. "If I meet their expectations they said I will play."
Brinson is the commitment No. 12 for the Orange in 2016 and is now the highest ranking member of the school's class.
