As the summer camps give way to another wave of programs offering previously undiscovered talent, one of the players that is seeing his recruitment get moving in a big way is Hutto 2021 defensive end Landyn Watson.

The young prospect has been on a tear since the spring, when he impressed at the Dallas Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas, and elsewhere. Now, he’s doing the same in front of college coaches at events around the state, and they’re liking what they’re seeing. This week was highlighted with an offer from TCU after he performed well at a Horned Frogs camp, he put himself on the map with Texas coaches before that at a Longhorns camp, and will be back at it again this weekend in front of coaches from more than 30 programs at a mega-camp in Commerce, Texas.

“The Texas camp was really good,” he said. “I opened up a lot of eyes on the UT coaching staff. I feel like me only going into my sophomore season with my size and athletic ability stood out. I learned a lot of techniques to take back to my school and add on to game.”

The offer from the Longhorns may still be pending, but it didn’t take TCU head coach Gary Patterson long to figure out that Watson is a bona fide prospect, and he personally delivered the offer to Watson.

“I’ve been talking to them since spring,” he said. “When I took an unofficial visit up there for the spring game, I sat down and talked with defensive coordinator Dan Sharp and he said that he would offer me on the spot, but he had to talk to Coach P because he never seen me in person and my athletic abilities.”

Midway through spring, Watson only held an offer from UTSA, but has since picked up offers from Baylor and Houston as well.

“It’s definitely a blessing,” he said “But it’s more motivation for me to keep going, not get big headed and try and achieve my goals.”

IN HIS WORDS

On Baylor

“I’m really close with one of the coaches there – Coach Shawn Bell – he originally coach at Cedar Ridge and he said that he would do everything he could to get me offered and stayed in touch. He visited my school just about every morning just because he liked what he saw.

“He told head coach Matt Rhule and he said that he wanted me up there for camp, then when I was out there on Sunday, he told me they wanted to talk to me and then they offered me.”

On Houston

“Coach A.J. Blum has been talking to my head coach for a while about me,” he said. “He was saying that he liked what he saw and that he could definitely see me playing for the university of Houston. I took an unofficial visit to Houston and we sat down to watch film and that’s when he told me they decided to offer me.”

More on Texas

“I was talking to (Oscar) Giles throughout the camp and was talking to him afterwards because he knew that I was going to be on campus the next day for an unofficial visit,” he said. “He told me that he liked what he saw, he’s going to go over tape and talked to me the following day.

“The visit went good, we toured campus, the facility, talked to some coaches and it was a lot of fun,” he said. “I sat down with (Giles) and my dad and he said that he wasn’t sure that he would offer me now, but he definitely likes what he sees.”

More on TCU

“At the camp, I won all of my reps, they watched me do agility drills and everything, and I got good feedback from Coach P and that’s when he offered me,” he said. “It means a lot; it showed a lot of interest because he said they don’t usually offer guys my age because they aren’t looking to build for years down the road. To get one this really means a lot – it means they’re definitely interested in me and not just offering me to offer me.”

“I definitely plan to visit again this summer or sophomore year,” he said. “They want to get me back on campus, but they like being around me and having my family out there, but I like being on campus to talk to the coaches, see some of the players and be in the TCU atmosphere.”
