2020 WR Jaxon Smith kicks off recruitment with SMU offer

DALLAS, Tex. -- Better days are ahead for 2020 Rockwall, Texas, wide receiver Jaxon Smith.

After returning a punt for a touchdown that would likely have tied Rowlett with two minutes left in the game, an offsides penalty took those points off the board and soured what was an otherwise impressive night for Smith. He finished the game with 11 catches for 261 yards and two touchdowns despite coming out on the wrong side of the 48-41 final score.

After that sort of performance, it’s no wonder some in-state programs have already taken a shine to him. He’s already picked up an offer from SMU and has plans to be on campus for a game later this season. After that, he said that Baylor and Houston have have both begun recruiting him as well.

“I really like them, they have a real great receiving corp,” he said. “They have a cool, great receivers coach in Coach (Justin) Stepp. I like their program a lot.”

Smith also said that he would be interested in taking in a Baylor game this season as well, and that he thinks the Bears are likely the next team to possibly offer him.

“It would mean a lot,” he said about potentially landing a Baylor offer. “It would just show that my hard work is paying off.”

RIVALS REACTION

Obviously, it’s still very early in the recruiting process for Smith, but he was by far the most explosive and exciting player on the field in his Week 2 matchup. He did have a couple of drops, but those were nothing more than an afterthought when thinking about the totality of his performance. Smith has all the makings of a dynamic, well-rounded receiver and should be a name to keep an eye on over the next few seasons.
