2020 CB RJ Mickens looking to build off successful spring

DALLAS, Tex. -- RJ Mickens may be one of the youngest of the top prospects in Texas, but he’s already started an impressive collection of offers and has had plenty to reflect on coming out of the spring.

Of course, right now, much of that reflection has been about his current team more so than a possible future team.

“It was a great spring,” he said. “It was really important for us to get the feel of our team; it’s starting to come together. I got to play some offense, so I’ve been just showing what I can do there, taking over on defense, stuff like that.”

Mickens was a recent visitor at LSU for the Tigers’ most recent prospect camp, and has plans to visit Oklahoma this weekend and Stanford at the end of July. His teammate on his 7-on-7 team, Texas Swoosh, 2019 defensive back Jonathan McGill recently picked up an offer from Stanford himself, and Mickens is hoping for similar results on his upcoming visit.

“I need to go out there and get one too,” he said. “Our big cornerback from before, Obi Eboh, went there and I’m real close with him too. He’s been telling me about Stanford, how it’s going, what’s good and how Coach (Duane) Akina teaches the DB’s and all that stuff.”

IN HIS WORDS

On LSU

“It went really good out there,” he said. “Coach (Corey) Raymond does a good job instilling a good mentality in his DB’s. He’s got the whole defense playing fast and aggressive. They want to play a lot of man-to-man and just go out there and play.”

On Oklahoma

“I’m real cool with Coach (Kerry) Cooks,” he said. “Obviously Coach (Bob) Stoops left, but I’m still cool with Coach (Mike) Stoops and Coach (Lincoln) Riley. One of my closest friends goes there so I can go up there and stay with him.”

RIVALS REACTION

Mickens has already long been a hot target in 2020 and continues to show development both physically and with his abilities as a cornerback. Even if his visit out west doesn’t yield an offer, he’ll no doubt be a name on Stanford’s recruiting board. With a long way still to go in his recruitment and many teams involved already, there isn’t much urgency towards making a commitment but taking note of his relationships and visits is certainly worth keeping track of.
