2020 ATH/QB Hudson Card already a top target out of Texas

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. -- Lake Travis has produced its share of quarterbacks in recent memory - most notably Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield - and beginning next season, 2020 prospect Hudson Card seems likely to be the next man up.

Last season, Charlie Brewer won a state championship before signing - and eventually starting this year for Baylor. Current quarterback Matthew Baldwin recently committed to Ohio State and even though he’s not throwing a ton of passes this season for the Cavaliers, he’s still getting plenty of reps.

In Lake Travis’ state quarterfinal win against Helotes-O’Connor on Saturday, Card hauled in seven receptions for 41 yards. When he’s played quarterback this season, he’s completed over 70-percent of his passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

“It’s been cool, it’s been different,” he said. “I’ve played quarterback all my life and this has kind have been my first try at receiver, but I’ve just been trying to do my part this year. I think next year I’ll start as the backup quarterback, but we’ll move on from there.”

Arkansas head coach Chad Morris was the first to move on Card when he was at SMU, and since moving on to Fayetteville wasted no time in offering him an opportunity with the Razorbacks as well. Otherwise, TCU and most recently, Tulsa, have also offered Card.

“It’s really cool,” he said. “It’s obviously a goal I’ve always wanted, but I’m still trying to stay focused on winning a state championship with my team and then move forward from there.”

Because Card is still so early in the recruiting process, his overall connection to any of the teams that have offered him so far has been pretty limited. Outside of a few names, the 2018 quarterback class in Texas hasn’t been overwhelmingly popular, but in the next few recruiting classes, several names are starting to emerge at the position, and early indications are that Card will be among those ranks before long.
