COLLEGE STATION, Tex. -- For a minute there, 2019 safety Jamal Morris wasn’t sure that he was going to be joining some of the other prospects in his class as one of the top recruiting targets in Texas. Then came the spring.

Morris now holds eight FBS offers not just from schools in Texas, but around the country, and if this offseason was a precursor for what’s to come in the fall, he could just be getting started.

“I feel comfortable because at first when I wasn’t getting offers, I wasn’t sure that I was good enough to play big-time football,” he said. But getting those offers was a big confidence-booster, so now I plan on playing up to my potential and doing everything I can for my team.”

Perhaps the name that draws the most attention on his offer sheet is Michigan - and the Wolverines have certainly made an early impact with him - but Morris visited Baylor recently and has plans to make a trip to TCU in the near future. With other offers from teams like Colorado, Houston, Oklahoma State and others, Morris still has plenty to consider heading into this fall.

IN HIS WORDS

On Baylor

“Since they have been coming back from everything and they have a new coaching staff, I really like that they’ve had to offer,” he said. “I liked the visit I took out there. A lot of people are writing them off after last year, but after talking to Coach (Matt) Rhule, I think that they got some big things coming up – it might not be next year – but it’s going to be big.”

On Michigan

“When I got Michigan I was confused,” he said. “To get that one, that’s big and for them to tell me not to worry about coming to a camp or anything and just offer me on the spot, that tells me a lot about what they think of my talent.”

“I have been talking a lot to Coach (Brian) Smith,” he said. “I like how they send a lot of guys to the draft – all their senior DB’s went to the league, so that’s big for me.”

On TCU

“Coach (Curtis Luper), the running backs coach, he’s been recruiting me for some time now,” he said. “He’s been breaking it down to me telling me that all the DB’s are seniors, so by the time I get up there I’m going to be fresh and ready to go.”

RIVALS REACTION

Morris might have been too humble in his worry about offers not coming in earlier than they did. He’s a long, rangy safety that can run with receivers and instinctively drives on receivers’ hands to break up passes on arrival. He’s already shown pretty solid cover skills to this point and as he continues to fill out physically, he’ll likely be a monster playmaker in the secondary for years to come.
