2018 R100 WR Brennan Eagles on Sooners, Horns, Vols and Bears offers

2018 Rivals100 wide receiver Brennan Eagles finished his junior season picking up some long-awaited offers, but got 2017 off to a strong start with a couple more.

Oklahoma and Tennessee came through with their offers in November. On December 30, Baylor’s new staff threw its name into the hat and Texas is Eagles’ most recent offer, which came last week.

“I was really waiting on Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas,” he said. “Baylor came out of the blue, I wasn’t really waiting on them but I’m trying to open my eyes and see what they have to offer.”

Things are getting interesting now for Eagles, who had been just sitting on a Houston offer heading into last spring, despite looking like a player two years ahead of his time. He’ll be busier this spring with more teams taking a harder look at him, but he sais that visits to Knoxville and Norman are tentatively the priority.

“Oklahoma and Tennessee are the main ones I want to go to,” he said. “Texas I can go to any time, Baylor I can go check out any time.”

IN HIS WORDS

On Baylor

“The old coach from Cedar Hill [Joey McGuire], he called me on the phone and offered,” he said. “Basically I would be playing a big role in that offense because they like them big on the outside. That kind of opened up my eyes - they started out strong and won their bowl game this year.”

“(Baylor) was the first college sort of looking at me coming from my sophomore heading into my junior year,” he said. “I want to see how this season is going to go with them though.”

On Oklahoma

“Coach (Dennis) Simmons and I have an excellent relationship,” he said. “(Ogbonnia Okoronkwo) went to my school and he’s there playing linebacker. He’s going to play another year there so I’ve talked to him I am going to go up there and spend some time with him.”

“I’m going to build that relationship with them, they’re definitely going to be a top team,” he said. “They always have good receivers and they throw the ball the most in the Big 12 as a matter of fact. Dede Westbrook was my favorite receiver and he was a Heisman finalist this year.”

On Texas

“Really I’m just waiting for the season to start,” he said. “At U of H, Coach (Tom) Herman threw the ball more, so I’m just waiting to see the season play out and see if UT is going to use more spread.”

“It opens up my eyes as a matter of fact,” he said. “It’s close to home, my mom likes it there, so it will definitely be one of my top schools when I decide to narrow some stuff down. It’s not far, family can come see me play and that’s a big deal – you always want moms right there by your side.”

RIVALS REACTION

Eagles showed during his junior season that he’s an elite receiver prospect and top college programs are all on board now. He expressed the desire to see how all of the teams most recently involved in his recruitment will do this season before making a hard decision on any of them.

Unlike Texas or Baylor, Tennessee is more of a known commodity as a program after the past couple of years, but may have a little more ground to make up with Eagles as it doesn’t have the geographical advantage of the other teams discussed. That said, he’s already establishing a nice rapport with Vols receivers coach Zach Azzani.

“Honestly I think a lot of receivers go there because they throw the ball a lot is what really attracts them to going out there,” he said. “Coach Z and I have been talking a lot and building a good relationship.”
