2018 4-Star OL Luke Matthews full steam ahead with A&M

With Jim Turner back in the fold at Texas A&M, the Aggies have done well pulling the strings with its offensive line recruiting - and not just in the 2017 class.

2018 four-star offensive lineman Luke Matthews committed in February to the Aggies, following in the footsteps of brothers Jake, Kevin and Mike. The family tradition seemingly makes his commitment a no-brainer decision, but Matthews said Turner plays a part in his choosing A&M as well.

“Things with Coach Turner are good - he’s a great guy and I like talking to him,” he said. “I’m looking forward to him being my coach someday ... He has the guys just driving people down field with a nasty mentality and that’s what you want from your offensive linemen.”

Even in the Aggies’ first loss of the season to Alabama this past week, Texas A&M still mustered 114 yards rushing against a defense that had only allowed more than 100 yards on the ground in just one other game this season.

Matthews said that sort of rugged play is appealing to him now as he anticipates a career as an Aggie. He’s also excited to see the steps the passing offense continues to make under offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone.

“I knew they were going to be the powerhouse that they always are,” he said. “I’m happy for them, I think they’re doing a great job just pounding that ball and throwing it too. Trevor Knight is a great QB and the offensive line is just crushing it.”

Matthews said that he’s eyeing a visit to College Station this season when the Aggies host either Ole Miss or LSU, but is excited to watch how his future position group will work against either of those two defensive fronts.

“Those teams both have strong defensive lines but if A&M keeps playing the way they are; pounding the ball and wearing the defense out, they’re going to win.”

In all likelihood, little drama to be expected between now and the end of his high school career. Of course, the success the program is having this season certainly sweetens the deal that much more.

“Things are good, I’m happy to go there soon,” he said. “I’m excited. I’d say it’s a pretty tight commitment.”
