This fall, class of 2015 Rivals250 linebacker Josh Smith had invites to attend games all across the Southeast. But more often than not, he found himself close to home at a Vanderbilt game with his older brother and 2013 Commodores commit Emmanuel Smith.
So now that the older Smith is opening up his recruitment while remaining pledged to Vanderbilt for the time being, what does that mean for Josh, who has stated multiple times he'd like to play with his brother at the next level?
"There's a potential for us to still play together, but we have to see what he's going to do first," Smith said. "He's still committed, but we're just waiting to see what happens right now and discussing it as a family."
The younger Smith was offered by new Penn State coach James Franklin along with his brother on Saturday night and said he's glad to add another big-time program to his list.
"It's a great offer," he said. "I'm just blessed to have another offer and the chance to play college football and another excellent school."
Smith said he doesn't know a whole lot about the Nittany Lions, but he's about to start the learning process.
"It's not a school that I know too much about, but I wouldn't have a problem getting familiar," he said. "The coaching staff made the decision that was best for them to make that move and they are coaches that I like and care for, so the fact that they want me still means a lot."
Smith spent last spring and summer visiting several college campuses and he plans to do the same again this summer, with Penn State likely on that list.
"I haven't seen the campus yet and I want to get up there and see some of the things they have to offer," he said. "It's a trip I will try to schedule so I can see the university for myself."
As far as his hometown school Vanderbilt is concerned, Smith said he'll continue to monitor the situation and see who will be on the next coaching staff.
"They're in the same spot, I'm just waiting to see how it plays out with the coaches who stay and go," Smith said. I want to see who the next coaches are, too, and then I'll see how the new coaches match up with my personality."
