2015 No. 1 overall player Byron Cowart lands at Maryland

After a tumultuous career at Auburn ended with a transfer early in the fall, former No. 1 overall player and five-star defensive end Bryron Cowart resurfaced on Wednesday. Cowart was announced as part of Maryland's early signee class, joining the Terps from Hillsborough Community College in Florida, where he was a student and not a football player.

The move reunites Cowart with Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin, who recruited Cowart while at Florida from 2013-14. It remains to be scene if Cowart will be eligible to play in 2018, especially considering he didn't leave Auburn until Sept. 19. It's also unclear whether Cowart will have one or two years of eligibility remaining considering he appeared in games for the Tigers this season.

As a high school prospect Cowart was viewed as a "can't-miss" talent, with size, speed and pass-rushing skills that had schools from all over the country battling to land his signature. After initially looking like he was headed to Florida, he ended up announcing for Auburn on Signing Day 2015, following fired Gators coach Will Muschamp to the Plains after he was hired to be the Tigers defensive coordinator.

But Muschamp lasted just one year in Auburn before leaving to take the head coaching job at South Carolina and Cowart struggled to find his place among a loaded group of defensive linemen. He managed just 15 tackles in his 26-game Auburn career.

Maryland should offer Cowart a chance at redemption as well as a chance to potentially save his dream of playing playing in the NFL.
