2009 Texas QB has good numbers

San Angelo (Texas) Lake View dual-threat quarterback John David Baker is a talented 2009 prospect to keep your eye on.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder threw for 1,500 yards as a sophomore and he's putting up good numbers in his first three games of his junior season.

"I'm sitting around 500 yards passing and I've gotten about five or six touchdowns with around 200 yards rushing or so," Baker said. "I'm just hoping to get around 2,000 yards throwing the ball and get up around 750 rushing with 20 touchdown passes. Those are just some personal goals.
"As I team I definitely want to just make some noise in district and then making playoffs and making a run in the playoffs. We have the team to do that with the leadership and the experience we have."
Baker said he relishes his role as a leader for his team.
"I'm a captain, and I know the guys look to me when we're down or we're up," he said. "I enjoy that role, I like being a leader. I think it comes with the position at quarterback. You're the leader of the offense and everything starts with him. It helps even more when the team looks to him to be a leader and I'm willing to step up and be that leader."
Baker is already starting to get plenty of mail from schools showing interest.
" Probably the most mail I see is from Texas Tech and Oklahoma State," he said. "I've gotten some stuff from out of state schools like Florida sent me some stuff and Notre Dame, but mostly I've tried to look at schools in state.
"I'd like to stay in Texas. There's nothing like Texas football, so that's what I'm kind of hoping for. Getting to play football in the state of Texas would be great. Both of my parents went to Tech, and I grew up a Tech fan, so it's been nice getting to see stuff from them. It's kind of early to think about an offer, but I'd definitely consider getting it over with if they did.
Baker did make it up to watch Tech play earlier this season against UTEP.
"It was very good," he said. "I've been there to their camp before, and I really enjoy the facilities and the coaching staff there. I have a brother that goes up there and I've been watching their games on TV for a long time. I hear a lot of stuff about them. They line it up and throw the football and that's what I like to do. That's one of the big things about them.
"I'm just kind of taking it as it comes right now. It's hard to do anything during the season since we have practice throughout the week and on Saturday, so it's hard to get away to go see games, but I'm sure I'll make it to a few."
